The 5 Best Photography Movies About Martin Parr

“The easy bit is picking up a camera and pointing and shooting. But then you have to decide what it is you’re trying to say and express.”

Martin Parr

British photographer Martin Parr (born in 1952) is known for his often critical look at modern society and his satirical approach of photography. In bright-colored images he explores the relationship between people and objects.

His work evolves around the subjects mass tourism, globalization and consumption.

He once said that if street photography was born in the USA, than the English shaped “seaside photography”; because wherever you are in England, you are always very close to the coast.

That idea is clearly reflected in two of Martin Parr’s most important publications, “Last Resort” and “Life’s A Beach”.

He’s spent years travelling around the world documenting life on the beach with his gift to find the extraordinary in the ordinary – just like William Eggleston before him. But whereas Eggleston’s photographic language is a lot more sober and focused on objects – showing the traces left behind by humans, Martin Parr is more a people photographer.

Mixed with a good dosis of British humor, his images are often flat-out funny at first glance; but they don’t stay on the surface. They penetrate a lot deeper and reveal things about our habits, rituals and traditions – and all the hidden absurdities of our lives.
